Mass, decoupling, damping
Sound control is three levers: add mass (double 5/8" board), decouple the board from the framing (resilient channel or clips and hat track), and damp the cavity (mineral wool, or a viscoelastic layer between sheets). Which combination applies depends on whether the noise is airborne speech or footfall from above.
Sealing is not optional
A rated assembly with an unsealed outlet box or a gap at the plate performs well below its lab number. We use acoustical sealant at the perimeter, back boxes in the party wall, and putty pads on electrical penetrations.
