What Level 5 actually means
The industry finish levels run 0 to 5. Level 4 is the residential default: taped, three coats on joints, spotted fasteners. Level 5 adds a skim coat over the whole surface so joint compound and paper face no longer differ in porosity. Anything with a sheen above eggshell, or a wall washed by a window or a downlight, wants Level 5.
