How keyed plaster fails
Plaster grips wood lath by its keys, the ridges of material squeezed between the strips when it was troweled on. Vibration, a leak, or a century of seasonal movement snaps those keys, and the plaster is loose long before the surface shows it. We sound the wall by hand, map the detached field, and cut back to material that is still anchored. Compound over a loose shell just cracks along the same lines.
Shimming board to the plaster plane
Original plaster runs thicker than modern board, and rarely by a consistent amount. We shim the new board off the studs or joists until it sits dead flush with the surrounding plaster, then tape the transition with paper tape bedded in setting-type compound so the change of material never reads as a step under wall-washing light.
Board over plaster instead of demolition
A ceiling that is cracked everywhere but still tight can take 3/8" board screwed through the plaster into the joists, for far less mess than a tear-out.
When tear-out is the right call
Plaster that sheds dust when tapped comes down along with the lath, and new board goes on the original framing.
