The separation is a code assembly
An attached garage requires a rated separation from the dwelling. In practice that means 5/8" Type X on the ceiling under living space and on the common wall, fastened and taped as a system. A rated board hung with the wrong screw spacing or an untaped joint is no longer a rated assembly.
Finish level for a working space
Most garages want Level 2 or 3: taped, coated, and paintable without the cost of a Level 4 sand. We will finish to Level 4 if the space is becoming a gym or a shop.
